The Rise of Artwear, Featuring Pimp Society by Lisa Fjørtoft

What is “artwear”? I was first introduced to wearable art by my amazing and talented friend Lisa Fjørtoft. In 2016, Lisa founded Pimp Society, an eco-conscious Norwegian company that creates “artwear”, customizable painted pieces that connect art, fashion, and sustainability.

Lisa’s mission with Pimp Society is “”to use art to disrupt the resource-intensive fashion industry. By “pimping” up already existing products, the goal is to increase the longevity of products to eliminate waste and reduce consumption. Pimp Society wishes to make art more accessible and therefore deliberately collaborates with the customer to create unique, personalized designs that reflect their innate style, creativity, and personality. Customization not only results in unique items but also allows you to express your individuality as well reducing waste.””

Her vision is clear: to create a community/creative “society” for individuals who wish to explore and give a voice to the uniqueness and creativity seen across the world. “Collaboration has not only been a key for my growth, but it also aligns with the vision for my company.” Lisa has collaborated with several other brands, such as French luxury brand Zadig et Voltaire in 2018 and 2019 as well as Norwegian shoe brand Lune in 2021. “I believe that creating strong bonds and connections will allow one to tap into their untapped potential.”

Lisa has personally learned the most through her collaborations with others, being able to connect with new individuals and expand her own horizon. Lisa hopes to do more collaborations in the future.

I don’t have any tattoos, but I think of Lisa as my personal tattoo artist except for my clothes, shoes, and accessories. Her designs promote individuality while transcending everyday fashion. I love everything about Lisa’s vision, and I’m proud of Pimp Society’s sustainable goals.

My “artwear” collection has only continued to grow since Lisa’s influence. Here are a couple more of my favorite wearable art brands.

Terrana Studio

This little Florence studio is larger than life. Burberry and Gucci painter Gaetano Terrana’s pieces are fully customizable, and nothing short of fun.

I purchased this jacket from the store in October 2019.
