35mm: California

Since arriving in San Diego for college, I made it a goal to capture the essence of my four short years. I never really described myself as a photographer because I’m self-taught; I haven’t taken a class about developing film or the mechanics of a camera. I suppose this was purposeful, I didn’t want to complicate a hobby with grades and structured assignments.  When I examine my relationship to photography – specifically 35mm format film – I find something distinctly personal: the ephemerality of snapping the perfect shot, the careful patience when processing a roll, and the nostalgic joy of looking back in time… those are the reasons I use film.

All of the photos below have been taken in California, either on the road or at home in San Diego. Here’s my life on the West Coast:
